How many pictures can you put on a memory card?

It depends on the capacity of the card as well as the resolution of your pictures and the compression setting on the camera.

For example: A 2 GB memory card with 10 megapixels holds approximately 700 pictures in JPEG format.

What is the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom?

Optical zoom is when the lens itself does the zooming. Digital zoom is when the software in the camera crops in on the photo.  You can digital zoom using most photo-editing software, so it is more important to consider optical zoom when you are purchasing a camera.

What does 3X zoom mean?

A zoom lens has a variable focal length which determines the magnification of the lens. A short focal length such as 35mm is a wide-angle lens, great for taking in large vistas. A long focal length such as 105mm is a telephoto lens, which allows you to get a tight photo of a distant object or person. A zoom lens lets you combine both of these and everything in between into a single adjustable lens (35-105). If a camera has a 3X zoom (pronounced 3 times zoom), it means that the longest focal length (105) is 3 times the shortest (35) therefore a 1” object at 35mm will be 3” tall at 105mm.

Are high-resolution pictures sharper than low-resolution pictures?

The sharpness of your pictures is based on your photography technique and the lens you use.  Taking your pictures at a high-resolution will capture more detail and will allow you to enlarge them.

Do smaller "point and shoot" cameras give you as good a photo as a DSLR camera?

No, for many reasons, but mainly because "point and shoot" cameras have a smaller image sensor than DSLR cameras.  "Point and shoot" cameras do have the advantage of being more compact and therefore more convenient for transporting.

What can I do to make my camera batteries last longer?

Your LCD screen uses a lot of battery power. If your camera has a viewfinder, you can turn off your LCD screen to help preserve your battery. You can also save battery power by switching your flash from automatic to manual and only using it when necessary. Rechargeable batteries made for digital cameras will last longer than disposable batteries.  Lithium batteries tend to last longer than alkaline batteries.
